Lighting your home: a how-to guide

When it comes to lighting your home there are so many choices available, which is actually a good thing. Despite what your electrician may tell you, life is not all about downlights! Lighting is such an easy way to add a little jazz to a room and bring focus to the areas you wish to highlight (literally).

Here we’ll talk you through the three different types of lighting, and show you our top picks for each.

Ambient Lighting

This is the overall lighting in a room and gives you enough light to be able to see and move about the space. It typically sets the overall mood of the space, so if you only have bright overhead lights, guess what? Your room will feel clinical and not very inviting. Dimmer controls and diffused lights are your friends when it comes to Ambient lighting.

Task Lighting

Task lighting allows you to see the specific task you’re doing - reading a book, studying or cooking for example.  They are typically a brighter light but very focussed. Having a task light that is adjustable to direct the beam, is a bonus.

Accent Lighting

This creates a focal point and draws attention to something in the room - perhaps an artwork or wall feature. It’s often a subtle, purely aesthetic lighting fixture and the light itself can actually be the feature!
