Designing a Coastal Bedroom

Coastal style homes continue to be more popular than ever and many of our clients come to us with a brief for this aesthetic. And for good reason too - they’re light, breezy, welcoming and really just typify the Australian way of life so beautifully. So how do you ‘get the look’ of a relaxed coastal bedroom that still has a luxurious feel? We’ve got all the details you’ll need…

Creating a coastal sanctuary is all in the layering, and building on a neutral palette as opposed to an old-school nautical palette. Starting with a base of white, oatmeal and soft shades of greens you can then add muted variations of colours found in nature such as grey, blue and pink to keep the space feeling calm. No saturated colours here! Oak, linen, leather, stone and aged brass will then add the all important texture layer to up the luxe factor.

Want the specifics of how we create a softly minimal coastal bedroom?

We’ve got you covered with our go-to suppliers and specs:

  • Flooring - Tongue and Groove engineered oak boards in Sepia - we like extra wide at 220mm for that luxurious look and feel. If you’d prefer carpet we’d recommend wool for it’s durability and the fact that it stays cool in summer. Cavalier Bremworth Levante is our pick

  • Paint - Dulux Snowy Mountain Half or Whisper White for walls, architraves and skirting boards. We use ceiling white for ceilings to give better coverage

  • Windows - Darley windows, powder coated in Zeus White. Louvre windows are essential for a coastal home as they for allow cross breezes, billowing curtains and that barefoot luxury feel

  • Curtains - S-fold sheers using a polyester fabric such as Warwick Palermo Birch or Icon Dove. It looks like linen but wears so well and can be washed easily. In bedrooms we always install an additional blackout curtain or roller blind fitted behind the s-fold

  • Bedheads - our favourites come from Create Estate and Bedsahead and are always upholstered in linen

  • Bedside lighting - the white wall lighting in some of these images is the Caravaggio from Cult Design. We also source lights from Lighting Collective, Urban Lighting, MCM House and MRD Home

  • Mirrors - a full length mirror in a bedroom is a must have! We love the New York mirror from MCM House and use it in many of our projects

  • Bedside tables - we love HK Living for these rounded cane bedsides but often specify them from Globe West, MCM House, Uniqwa, Trit House or Adairs

  • Linen - our favourites come from Sheet Society, I Love Linen, Country Road, Bed Threads and of course Cultiver for that extra luxe feeling

  • Throw cushions - so many options to choose from and we often have these custom made for clients, but our go-to off the shelf cushions are from Eadie Lifestyle, Citta Design, Weave Home and Klovah. Feather inserts are a must!
